Aston Martin will produce a small batch of new gadget-laden DB5s that James Bond himself would be proud of.
Any DB5 you find in the wild today is very unlikely to come loaded with machine guns or an ejector seat, but the 25 silver-painted ‘Goldfinger DB5 continuation edition’ models will feature actual functioning gadgets, such as rotating number plates, developed by EON Productions.
Each car will cost £2.75 million, which means the vast majority of us would need a heavy lottery win to even begin dreaming about owning one, but none of the cars will be road legal anyway (rotating number plates is prime getaway material).
Aston says the cars will be authentic reproductions of the DB5 seen in the movies, with “some sympathetic modifications to ensure the highest levels of build quality and reliability”.
Under the bonnet is a 282bhp 3,995cc straight-six engine that is capable of a 0-60mph sprint in 7.1 seconds, picking up speed until it hits 148mph.
One of the guys working on the gadgets will be special effects supervisor Chris Corbould[https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0179269/], who has worked on 12 Bond films and even won an Oscar and a BAFTA for his visual effects work on 2011’s mind-bending thriller Inception. Other titles in his IMDB filmography include Star Wars (The Last Jedi, The Force Awakens) and The Dark Knight.
Andy Palmer, president and chief executive officer at Aston Martin, said: “To own an Aston Martin has long been an aspiration for James Bond fans, but to own a Silver Birch DB5, complete with gadgets and built to the highest standards in the very same factory as the original James Bond cars? Well, that is surely the ultimate collectors’ fantasy.
“The skilled craftspeople at Aston Martin Works and the expert special effects team from the James Bond films are about to make this fantasy real for 25 very lucky customers.”
