The Mercedes GLA class was already considered one of the most powerful compact crossover models on the market, but now it is getting a serious upgrade through the inclusion of the AMG-fettled engine!
Now packing up to 416bhp, the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 stands tall in the world of compact crossovers, being the latest model to receive Affalterbach’s M139 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. This engine is the most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production, having also been fitted to the A 45 and CLA 45.
With this upgrade, the GLA 45’s standard variant is able to achieve a staggering 382bhp. However, if you were to get behind the wheel of the top of the range S-model, you’ll have an additional 33bhp under your feet.
The Mercedes-AMG comes with a variable four-wheel-drive system, using torque vectoring technology to change the level of power that is sent to each of the rear wheels. As both of the rear wheels are controlled by an individual electronic multi-disc clutch, this allows the wheels to be disengaged from the drive shaft separately.
It also features an eight-speed automatic gearbox with dual-clutch which is configured so that it can offer maximum and spontaneous acceleration, no matter what your current speed is. Add to this the AMG suspension set-up that has been fitting to the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 and you have an exceptional compact crossover.
It has been announced that only the more powerful variant of the GLA 45 will be coming to the UK, with a release around Summer and an expected cost of £52,000.
