Fiat to hit EU emissions target

Car manufacturer Fiat is set to meet the European Union's 2015 emissions target well ahead of schedule, it has been claimed.

According to a new study, the firm will be joined by Toyota, which has worked hard to reduce its own carbon footprint in the past year.

A European Commission-funded research piece conducted by the European Federation for Transport and Environment and looking into newly manufactured cars for the 2009 period, showed that Fiat was just one gram of carbon dioxide per kilometre away from the 2015 target of 130g/km.

However, the worst performing manufacturers – BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler – were not far behind, with the worst performing of the three, Daimler, on 167g/km.

Author of the report Jos Dings said: "All available evidence suggests that carmakers in Europe are heading for very significant 'overcompliance' with the CO2 regulation and are hence likely to hit the target for 2015 years in advance."

Fiat hopes that its advanced Fiat 500 Twinair, which features a 875cc two cylinder low-consumption petrol engine, will revolutionise motoring.
