IAM issues wet weather advice

The recent flooding issues across many parts of the UK has led to the Institute of Advanced Motorists’ (IAM) to warn drivers about the dangers of driving in heavy rain.

Mark Lewis, the director of IAM, explained it is vital motorists are prepared before heading off on any journey in adverse weather conditions.

Drivers should ensure they check the local travel news and consider if their trip is really necessary rather than risk being involved in an accident or stuck in traffic.

It is recommended before getting behind the wheel that all lights and windscreen wiper blades are checked to be in working order, as well as ensuring the tyre pressure and tread depth will provide significant grip on wet roads.

Once on the move, keep vigilant as the additional water can lead to damaged road surface and puddles can hide potentially dangerous pot-holes in the road.

Mr Lewis stressed that it is important to reduce speeds when travelling in wet weather as the additional water on the road surface will decrease stopping distances considerably.

He added: “Torrential rain may interfere with the electrics of a vehicle causing a breakdown. Prepare for the worst by keeping your mobile phone charged and with the number of your breakdown service provider already saved on it. While you wait for help keep your bonnet closed as soaking the engine will only make it worse.”

Finally, it is worth driving with dipped headlights during rainy conditions as often there can be reduced visibility in poor weather.
