Travel stress-free this bank holiday

There are ways to drive stress-free this bank holiday.

Planning on hitting the road this bank holiday weekend to enjoy the extra day off work and to visit friends and family? Hopefully the sun will be shining and the rain kept at bay – the only problem is that lots of other people will have the same idea and that means the roads are likely to be choc-a-bloc.

But rather than letting this dissuade you from taking a well-deserved break, you should think smart about how best to deal with the extra cars on the road. The bank holiday is a time for fun and frolics and the last thing you want is to be queueing up in a hot car for hours on end.

Luckily, GEM Motoring Assist has come up with some handy tips to make sure your bank holiday journey is stress-free and allow you to make the most of the three-day weekend.

The company recommends:

Constantly checking your mirrors when in urban areas, especially when changing lanes or making a left-hand turn.

Be wary in rural areas, as the roads are likely to be narrower and you may be sharing them with slow-moving hazards, such as farm vehicles and even animals.

Use motorway lanes properly. You can now be fined for poor use of motorway lanes, so be sensible and considerate when travelling at high speeds. It is recommended that you predominantly use the left-hand lane, only going in the middle and right lanes in order to overtake other road users.

Be prepared for any eventuality on the road by making all the necessary checks beforehand. This includes having a look at your brakes, tyres, lights, windscreen wash, oil and water levels.

David Williams, chief executive officer at GEM Motoring Assist, commented: "Taking a bit of extra time to prepare your car and plan your journey will help to ease the stress of travelling this weekend.

"With more traffic likely to hit the roads during the bank holiday break, we strongly urge people to take the necessary precautions."
