Tyre safety driven home with new motorway messages

Drivers are being reminded of tyre safety on the motorway.

All drivers like to consider themselves as being sensible when behind the wheel, but are you covering all bases when it comes to safety on the road? For example, do you regularly check your tyres to make sure they are the right pressure and condition?

Poorly looked-after tyres can be very dangerous, leading to tailbacks, closed lanes, injury and even death – so ensuring they are in good nick is of the utmost importance. This is something that has been recognised by TyreSafe, which is hoping to raise awareness of the issue through a new campaign.

The message 'Safe tyres save lives' is now appearing along motorways in the UK in a bid to drive home the message. Checking
the pressure and condition of tyres is something that should be performed at least once a month, while it is also vital to make sure your tyres meet the legal minimum tread depth requirements.

You can therefore expect to see the reminders the next time you make your way along the motorway and I reckon the initiative is a brilliant way to ensure as many people are thinking about the matter at all times.

Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyerSafe, agrees, stating: "The new message signs are a great reminder to drivers about the four small pieces of rubber that are responsible for them being able to brake or corner and arrive at their destination safely.

"When tyres are under-inflated, they are much more likely to suffer from a rapid failure which can have potentially catastrophic consequences."

He explained tyres that are not pumped up as much as they should be are more likely to wear out quicker, while they can also cost you dear by causing you to use more fuel.

The news comes after TyreSafe recently recommended drivers keep their tyres well pumped up in hot weather, as under-inflated tyres are at greater risk of deflating rapidly when the temperatures rises and people are driving at great speed for a sustained period.
