Commuters opt for cars

Commuters are moving away from public transport and towards driving to work, according to new figures.

Data from the Department for Transport shows people are choosing to travel by car, despite strong government investment in the country’s public transport network.

In 2015, Brits made an average 453.4 journeys by car and this is forecast to increase to 503.9 by 2040. However, the number of cycling journeys are expected to fall from 22.1 to 20.5 and there is set to be a 25 per cent fall in bus trips taken.

Shadow transport secretary Lillian Greenwood, told the Times: “Ministers claim that they will double cycling journeys by 2025 but their own projections predict that cycling will tail off.”

The news will be welcomed by the motoring industry, especially within the compact car market.
