This year’s Geneva International Motor Show marked a departure from its traditionally flamboyant character. The 2024 edition was characterised by a more understated tone, with the spotlight firmly on the cars themselves, from groundbreaking electric vehicles (EVs) to the resurgence of iconic models.

New Faces…

However, it was Lucid that stole the show among the newcomers. The American EV manufacturer, known for its cutting-edge technology and luxurious electric cars, is poised to challenge Tesla’s dominance with the pitch of creating similarly future-forward cars that don’t have the stench of Elon Musk and his many controversies. Lucid announced its foray into select European markets, including Germany, with its impressive Air Pure and the high-performance Air Sapphire models, boasting a range of 464 miles and acceleration from 0-62mph in just 2.0 seconds. The UK market eagerly awaits its arrival in 2026.

… and Some Old Faces Too

Renault captivated hearts with the return of the beloved Renault 5, reintroduced as the E-Tech. Staying true to the visionary 2021 concept car’s design, the new model has already seen over 50,000 orders, underscoring its appeal and the public’s anticipation for its 2025 launch in the UK.

MG Motor UK, under the aegis of Chinese giant SAIC Motor, demonstrated its evolution from a British classic to a globally recognized brand that excites and pleases. As the MG MG4 EV continues to be in rude health, the Geneva Motor Show was the stage for MG’s unveiling of the electric Cyberster roadster, featuring futuristic ‘scissor-style’ doors and a multiscreen cockpit, set to hit the roads this summer.

Dacia Does Dakar

Romanian automaker Dacia has won the hearts of many car fans for their ability to squeeze mammoth ambitions into small price tags. This year, they announced their most ambitious vehicle yet – and it’s not for public sale. Rather, it’s the company’s first endeavour into motorsport, and they’ve decided to start at the legendary Dakar Rally.

The Dacia Sandrider is a low-carbon rally raid racer that Dacia intends to enter into the 2025 Dakar Rally among other legs of the World Rally Raid Championship, and will be driven by Cristina Gutierrez Herrero, Nasser Al-Attiyah and the most successful rally driver of all time, Sébastien Loeb. This announcement was made alongside the unveiling of the new Dacia Duster and the electric city car, the Dacia Spring.

A New Generation of Nanocars

When the Citroen AMI launched in 2020, many were puzzled by its pitch as a “nanocar” – a car purely for city streets that is less than 2½m long, has a top speed of 28mph and an official range of 46 miles per hour. This year, it seems that it has started to influence others to add to this niche market of city-going quadricycles. The Geneva Motor Show saw the introduction of the Silence SO4 and the Microlino Lite, both aimed at transforming city transportation. The Microlino Lite, in particular, drew attention with its unique front-door entry, reminiscent of the classic BMW Isetta.
