The past five years has seen an 1,864 per cent increase in the number of electric vehicle registrations.
Figures from the Department for Transport show between 2011 and 2016, more than 100,000 Ultra Low Emission Vehicles have been registered as motorists embrace alternative options.
According to Moneybarn, the most popular electric vehicle on the UK road is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with a total of 7,572 registrations. The Nissan Leaf was the next most popular eco-friendly car, followed by the electric models of the Mercedes C-Class.
Simon Bayley, sales and marketing director of Moneybarn, said: “It’s a potentially exciting time for the UK car industry. Electric and alternative energy cars have now moved into the mainstream and are here to stay.
“With the government investing a billion pounds in this sector there is an alignment between manufacturers and government that will hopefully encourage consumer purchasing for years to come."
The government has already confirmed all sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles will stop by 2040.
