2022 Jeep Wrangler Overview

Jeep and other 4X4 lease special offers

In this review…

The SUV army seems to be growing by the year. Each new car that conveniently features four-wheel drive, rugged bodywork, impressive handling and hill descent control, are all fighting for that top spot as hardy, capable, off-road machines. One of the longest-reigning kings of the off-road world is the Jeep Wrangler.

When most of us think of off-road driving, we picture a Jeep with its top rolled back and adventure peaking over the horizon. Now, most Jeep and other 4X4 drivers spend 90% of their time on ACTUAL roads and not across exotic sand dunes. Day-to-day handling and comfort are just as important as its off-road capabilities and, according to Jeep, the latest Wrangler is the most comfortable model to drive yet and improved interior space with the car remaining an incredibly raw off-roading device.

Of course, similarly to competitors like the Toyota Land Cruiser and the much pricier Mercedes G-Class, the 2022 Wrangler is designed to be as comfortable off the road as it is on it. Can the SUV haul itself up a mountain without breaking into a sweat? Am I going to be able to take it along the British country roads? Will it also be able to fit in my monthly food shopping?

That is exactly what the latest Jeep Wrangler offers. As well as these handy characteristics, the Wrangler sports its iconic retro exterior style that pays homage to the original Jeep from World War II. The iconic off-roader is also offered with the traditional two-door body style and even a four-door option that gives drivers extra space for passengers and cargo.

The body, interior layout and finish

The Wrangler is an instantly recognisable icon of the automotive world. Giving some very obvious nods to the original military Jeep, the 2022 Wrangler is a big beast. The wheel arches clearly mark out the sides of the car and the lofty driver’s perch and big windows aid all-round visibility and size management.

The Jeep Wrangler is available in either two or four-door forms, but both benefit from improved interior quality inside as well as an array of modern technology. The two-door model, which is offered as standard, has a rather small boot and can be difficult to shoehorn your way past the front seats and into the rear ones. The four-door, however, is much better for boot space and its headroom front and back is good too, although rear knee room is still average for tall adults.

As for the impressive tech, the Wrangler comes with a reversing camera and parking sensors fitted as standard. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment is modern and very easy to use and can even be paired with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Other modern features include cruise control, ambient interior lighting, in-dash navigation, onboard Wi-Fi and an eight-speaker stereo. Up-level trims, in comparison to some older models, are undeniably luxurious. The new Wrangler features leather upholstery with plusher plastics and slicker switches and a power-operated soft top.

Most Wrangler owners can admit that they purchased the Jeep for its iconic looks. The latest upgrade still manages to keep its famous shape which included the bold seven vertical-slat grille and (now LED) round headlights on its bluff front end. It has an old-school ladder-style chassis for sturdiness. For those more outgoing drivers, Jeep is offering you new colours including bright orange, yellow and green to choose from too.

Engine and drive

The Wrangler is an entirely unique purchase in comparison to a lot of other SUVs as it’s a convertible crossed with an off-road warrior, it’s a four-seater that’ll likely work well enough when it’s time to take children to school. Of course, the Jeep is a serious off-roader too. This means that it handles really well and can take a bit of a beating. This beast comes equipped with the right Dana axles, locking differentials, 33-inch tires, and skid plates.

The standard 285-hp 3.6-litre V-6 from the previous-generation Wrangler makes its way under the hood of the new Wrangler. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is optional and teams up with an electric motor to provide additional low-end power. In addition to the standard V-6 and optional four-cylinder hybrid, the Wrangler can also be equipped with a 3.0-litre diesel V-6; a new, 375-hp plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain and a 6.4-litre V-8 are also available. The engine is quiet and smooth, but the power is plentiful. The official 0-62mph time is a mere 7.2 seconds.

For the ultimate off-road machine, many Jeep lovers will turn to the optional turbodiesel, for its locomotive low-end grunt. Wranglers are born off-road ready, so part-time four-wheel drive is standard across the range and is controlled by a lever on the centre console. You’ll find the Wrangler, like a lot of off-roaders, is very much at home on squelchier surfaces. For these surfaces, it has a lever on the centre console that takes you from two to four-wheel drive and allows you to switch between different four-wheel-drive modes.

Is the Jeep Wrangler a good car?

The latest Jeep Wrangler is the fourth generation of this remarkable machine since the ‘Wrangler’ name was first applied to the recipe in 1986. It definitely holds up to Jeep’s reputation as being one of the toughest, most capable off-roaders in the business. Jeep is aware that image is crucial when it comes to new releases and manages to keep its traditional styles and designs.

Alongside its stylish body and colours, it still has an incredible go-anywhere ability that represents the cornerstone of its appeal. The Wrangler may have a relatively low Euro NCAP safety rating – it scored just one star out of five – but it is a very reputable brand and impressive engine.
