BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé 2022 Overview

In this review…

BMW has a rich and impressive history in small yet sporty coupes. The German car maker is infamous for Coupe models such as the BMW 4 Series, 8 Series and, of course, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé Sport.

With the 2022 BMW 2-series, the German automaker makes its entry-level, two-door car even more appealing than some competitor top-level models. BMW understands that not everyone is looking for a practical five-door hatchback and this is exactly why they have released the BMW 2 Series Coupé.

The 2022 2-series Gran Coupé has cemented its place in the affordable end of the BMW lineup with low starting prices and even more appealing lease deals. In typical BMW fashion, the Coupé satisfies driving enthusiasts and industry professionals alike with a frisky demeanour and an impressive engine.

Its main rivals, such as the similarly style-focused Mercedes CLA and Audi A5 Sportback, have left some rather big shoes to fill. Luckily, the 2-series Gran Coupe has come prepared. Features such as a premium cabin, a compact body and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine are just some of the reasons why this German beast is so popular. Aimed at a younger audience than some of its predecessors, the Coupe Sport has playful handling and the same litheness as BMW’s larger, rear-wheel-drive sedans.

The Body, Interior Layout and Finish

Since the BMW 2 Series has a younger audience, the body and features of the car have been amended. The body offers a sleeker roofline and a somewhat funkier interior. The main and most noticeable changes are found on the body of the car. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has crisp LED lights at the front as well as a distinctive large grille. The frameless doors, which allow for a lower roof, create an overall cleaner and sharper appearance.

The interior of the BMW Gran Coupe 2 Series has a similar set-up as in the 1 Series. The soft-touch material’s build quality is to a very high standard and the front seats are spacious and comfortable with plenty of room for adjustments.

Alongside a roomy interior and quality materials, BMW is offering a fantastic range of optional futuristic tech such as a universal garage-door opener and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Plus there’s an easy-to-use infotainment system included on all models.

This modern and driver-focused design not only makes for a spacious car to drive, but an enjoyable one too. Ambient interior lighting can be found throughout the interior which illuminates the dashboard and door panels. Two new colours are now available for drivers to choose from – Phytonic Blue Metallic and Skyscraper Grey Metallic – however buyers can no longer order the black leather upholstery with blue accents.

Engine and Drive

The range available is simple. The choices are between a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol 218i with 140hp, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder 220d diesel or the top-of-the-range M235i with a 306hp 2.0 petrol. If you opt for the 1.5 then it comes with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic. The 200d on the other hand comes with an eight-speed automatic only. Many find that the 1.5-litre petrol is the best all-rounder out of the lineup but the diesel is good for long trips.

Just like some of the interior details, the BMW shares a few similarities with the 1 Series under the hood. The Gran Coupé’s kinship to the 1 Series extends to its mechanical setup, with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive versions available. No matter which version in the lineup you pick, the 2 Series Gran Coupe guarantees you a comfortable drive with lots of grip and precise steering. Perfect for bendy country roads and smooth motorways alike.

Is the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé a Good Car?

Overall, yes. The 2 Series Gran Coupe is good to drive, comfortable for drivers and passengers alike and has a great quality interior. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé delivers a fantastic blend of driver appeal and safety. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross-traffic alert
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist

For more information about the 2-series Gran Coupe’s crash-test results and other important safety features, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Euro NCAP has yet to put the car through its rigorous crash tests, but the 1 Series scored the full five stars when it was tested in 2019 and, since there are so many similarities between the two, should bode well for our Gran Coupe.
