Fiat and Mazda join forces for new roadster

Car manufacturers Fiat and Mazda are joining forces to develop and produce a new roadster for Mazda and Alfa Romeo marques.

The two organisations have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to construct the vehicle based on Madza's MX-5 rear-wheel-drive architecture.

Both Fiat and Mazda will come up with their own design for a roadster, each entirely different and very distinctively styled to their respective brand. Both will be rear-wheel drive and the Alfa Romeo and Mazda cars will be powered by proprietary engines.

Production is expected to begin at some point during 2015, so those looking for Mazda deals on the roadster will have a few years wait.

"Establishing technology and product development alliances is one of Mazda’s corporate objectives and this announcement with Fiat is an important first step in that direction," said Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda's representative director and chairman of the board, president and chief executive.

Fiat's chief executive Sergio Marchionne added: "By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognized leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition."
