The 50th anniversary of the launch of the Ford Cortina has been marked by the BBC.
In a special segment to celebrate the milestone, the broadcaster's One Show ran a feature on the popular motor, which was presented by comedian and actor Alexei Sayle.
The Cortina was first unveiled on September 21st 1962 and cost £573 for the standard 1200 saloon version. Over the next two decades, 4.3 million of the vehicles were produced, with the assembly of the last model taking place in July 1982.
Ford's Sierra model replaced the Cortina at this point, but the manufacturer noted the success of the vehicle played a part in making the carmaker the market leader in the UK – something that can be seen in the latest Ford deals.
The brand stated: "The Cortina was so successful and so different from other cars in the industry that in Britain it inspired what became known as the Cortina class."
