Ford has unveiled two new Ford Fiesta Zetec models, and have made an astonishing claim that it can outperform the Bugatti Veyron per litre.
After being the subject of more new car deals and leases in the UK than any other vehicle, the Ford Fiesta is set for a new lease of life with the introduction of two upcoming models. The American automaker has announced the Ford Fiesta Zetec S Red and Black Edition, a twin launch that is set to combine striking looks, surprising performance and sustainable levels of fuel efficiency.
Bafflingly, Ford has stated the new models will feature the most powerful 1.0-litre volume engines on a production car ever, amazingly offering more power per litre than the Bugatti Veyron.
“These two new Fiestas make an unquestionably bold statement on the road and will give drivers an equally distinctive experience behind the wheel with a sportier version of our 1.0-litre EcoBoost and enhancements to the Fiesta’s acclaimed ride and handling,” said Roelant de Waard, the Ford’s European Vice President of marketing, sales and service.
The numbers seem to check out if going by Ford’s claim. Both the Veyron and new Fiesta’s engines are turbocharged, but while the Bugatti Veyron’s legendary W16 engine produces 123bhp per litre, the new Fiesta Zetec’s 999cc engine is set to produce 136bhp per litre. If Ford has truly pulled this off, it will make for a very commendable achievement indeed.
In terms of design, the two-toned Fiesta Zetecs will be three-door models with front upper and lower grille surrounds, front bumper aerofoil and mirror caps in contrasting colours. Additionally, its black 17-inch alloy wheels will help give the car an imposing look on the road. The body kit is finished by front and rear sports bumpers, side skirts and rear roof spoiler, while inside, the driver will find a black leather sports steering wheel and gear lever gaiter with red stitching.
In terms of performance, the 140PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has been given a unique calibration with new settings for turbocharger boost control, valve-timings, intercooler and throttle management. These tweaks offer 12% more power and an even sportier driving experience by boosting 0-62mph acceleration to just nine seconds. This will surely make you feel like you’re racing in a souped-up go-kart, but despite the impressive performance, the models will still deliver 62.8 mpg fuel efficiency and 104g CO2/km emissions.
Ford’s European vehicle personalisation chief designer John Mcleod described the design of its upcoming Zetecs as bold, distinctive and contemporary, but both cars do have “subtly different personalities” that will appeal to drivers of differing tastes.
