Ford moves towards all-digital entertainment

People looking for Ford deals will soon have the added benefit of an all-digital in-car entertainment system with increased connectivity.

The all-new Ford Focus will not contain the once-popular multi-disc CD changer as Ford has decided to implement a USB connection and Bluetooth as standard, as sales of CDs continue to fall and the popularity of digital music increases.

According to figures from the British Phonographic Industry, the number of CD albums sold in the UK fell 35 per cent between 2006 and 2010, while the number of digital album sales increased more than seven-fold.

Sheryl Connelly, global trends and futuring manager, Ford Motor Company, said in-car entertainment is moving towards the digital platform more rapidly than almost any other element of the vehicle experience.

"The in-car CD player – much like pay telephones – is destined to fade away in the face of exciting new technology."

Ralf Brosig, multimedia manager at Ford, said the car maker will continue to offer CD players where there is demand but he noted that customer preferences are expected to lead the way towards an all-digital approach to in-car audio entertainment.

Motorists looking for Ford Focus deals will be able to use the new SYNC with MyFord Touch system, which will include multiple USB inputs, SD card ports, RCA inputs and Bluetooth connectivity.

The system will also act as a password-protected wireless hotspot for up to five devices, providing internet connectivity through USB or mobile phone broadband modems.

Wireless connectivity has the potential to allow passengers to access cloud computing services on the move.

Ford expects two million SYNC-equipped vehicles to be on the road in Europe by 2015.

The new system enhances Ford's reputation for innovative entertainment systems which dates back to 2003, when Ford became the first manufacturer to offer DAB Digital Radio as a dealer-fitted accessory in the UK.

Ford recently announced it had received over 2,000 orders for its new Ford Focus model.
