Ford Mustang Mach-E Review

Ford Mustang Mach-E Review

In this review…

Since its unveiling in 2019, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has been raked over the coals.

An EV revamp of the classic muscle car, the Mach-E has been called, “the dumbest idea to come out of Ford since Edsel.”

Another proclaimed: “Your Ford Mustang is now an electric shopping cart”.
But if we cool our jets about the co-opting of the legendary Mustang name, what’s underneath is a formidable electric crossover that rivals the likes of the Jaguar I-Pace, Volkswagen ID.4 and Volvo XC40 Recharge. With the added pedigree of the Mustang brand, does the Mach-E offer a compelling change from the usual electric SUVs? We take a look at the brand new model to find out.

Design and Interior

There’s little doubt that this is a Mustang from the outside. It strikes that same tantalising fear in you with its sculpted front bumper accents, arced bonnet and dagger-shaped headlights. There are some practical features such as 18-inch wheels, a hatchback boot and a 100-litre front trunk.

Moving inwards, the cabin has a stereotypical Americana look coated with leather and thick stitching. Now, there’s a Tesla-inspired 15.5-inch vertical touchscreen that acts as a hub for all the vehicle’s controls. It’s not a complete give-in to future technology, however, as there is a luxurious twist knob that allows you to alternate between touch and physical controls like a bilinguist could switch between English and Spanish.

EV Specs and Performance

The EV-fication of the Mustang has brought some very respectable results on the battery power and range front. You can either have a standard-range 75kWh battery or an extended-range 98kWh version, which is slated to take you up to 372 miles. That’s enough to get you from London to Paris with no stoppages.

The Mustang Mach-E certainly performs like a muscle car should – 0-62mph is over and done with in just 4.4 seconds. However, if you really want performance, the Mach-E GT version has 480bhp and decreases the 0-62 time to 3.7 seconds, making it even quicker than the gas-guzzling Ford Mustang coupe. You’ll feel the Mustang blood coursing through the veins of this car when you take off from a standing start

Drive

With the acceleration being so rapid, you’ll feel the Mustang blood coursing through the veins of this car when you take off from a standing start. But what’s most surprising is how well is corners. Muscle cars are infamous for handling like a cruise liner, but here, Ford has clearly worked to make corners feel as light and clean as possible. The result is a more well-rounded car that doesn’t just feel like it’s designed for Route 66.

Final Verdict

On performance alone, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has blasted past the initial uproar. But getting to know this model is a pleasure, as it unfolds into a credible addition to the electric vehicle market for those looking to transfer the muscle car experience into the next frontier of motoring.

What’s the reason behind the Mustang branding? In our opinion, the willingness to redefine a safe and historic brand associated with traditional power being completely flipped is a sign of Ford’s commitment to EV power. Why else would they stake their proudest model?
