Jeep Avenger Review

Though the city is its playground, the Avenger is just as capable on the outskirts and beyond.

In this review…

On first look, the new Jeep Avenger asks more questions than it answers. When most of us think of off-road driving in a sports utility vehicle, we picture a Jeep with its top rolled back and adventure peaking over the horizon. But how can the company possibly keep that feel of adventure in a mild-hybrid crossover SUV made for city life?

Additionally, the Jeep may once have been the silhouette in our heads when we thought of SUVs, but now it has to compete with the likes of the Nissan Juke, Kia Niro, Volvo EX30 and Ford Puma. With all this and more against them, is the new Jeep Avenger worth it? We look at it from a design, interior, EV, practicality and drive standpoint all in this review to find the answer.

Design and Interior

The Jeep Avenger’s slender dimensions make it an SUV that thrives on the city streets. It’s the smallest Jeep you’ll find today, and the second smallest in the company’s history aside from the original Willys Jeep used in World War II. What’s more, its bodywork is rounder and bubblier than what you may expect from Jeep, but the emphasis on toughness is still there. You’ll notice the plastic sections across the body that guard the headlights, grille, door paint and more, similar to the Citroen C4 Cactus’ revolutionary airbumps but more substantial.

Inside, the Jeep makes comprises to keep it a budget-conscious SUV, with plastic materials across the cabin space. However, there are a few appreciated furnishings, such as the over-20” digital dash screenage, and a covered cubby hole underneath the infotainment console, and you can take your pick between Jeep’s dedicated sat nav or through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Practicality

Space is used effectively in the Avenger. With 380 litres of boot space with the seats up, this is something for the weekly shop or packing for a weekend away. Adults can fit in the rear seats snugly, and in the front, there is an additional space of 31 litres.

Drive

Though the city is its playground, the Avenger is just as capable on the outskirts and beyond. Thanks to three driving modes, “Normal”, “Eco” for fuel-saving driving, and “Sport” mode which gives you full access to over 150bhp. Its lightweight build means acceleration is aplenty and handling is as nimble as a housefly. This is all with a fabulous ride with substantial suspension height and damping control, making those long journeys across miles of tarmac surprisingly comfortable.

Final Verdict on the Jeep Avenger

For its spec, the Jeep Avenger comes up with many surprises. It’s speedy, terrific to drive and comfortable when you need it to be. Practicality has been thought about, and it doesn’t look half bad, either. This model is made for affordability, but it’s Jeep’s long-standing pedigree that pushes the Avenger over the competition.
