It is hard to deny the impact that the Ford Focus has had on the UK automotive industry. Since the 90s, this unsung hero has been a pillar on the British roads. But what more can they offer us without cutting out the simplistic charm of the car? Well, the new Ford Focus offers drivers fresh new technology, a variety of customisable colours and an enhanced powertrain line-up.

The Ford Focus is fast approaching its 25th birthday, and ever since the momentous first Focus hit the British roads, few other models from their competitors have delivered such a strong all-round package so consistently. While this mid-life update for the new Ford Focus isn’t a drastic one, it does offer subtle styling changes on the outside that are complemented by a huge boost to the in-car tech.

Of course, having such a consistently high-performing vehicle does come with its fair share of rivals. The Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 Sportback and BMW 1 Series just to name a few. To stay ahead of these top-end rivals while keeping quality is a constant task. But with the sheer unstoppable number of hatchbacks and estates that Ford is unleashing onto the world, how does this compare to older models? Does the new Ford Focus Hatchback compete or are families still fighting in line for the Ford Focus Estate? Let’s see.

What’s the Difference Between a Ford Focus Estate and a Ford Focus Hatchback?

An estate vehicle can often be seen as taking on the same design traits as a saloon or hatchback yet they are almost always longer. It is often the case that a saloon’s rear window will end at the cabin, whereas an estate’s rear window extends to the boot lid which increases cargo room. The obvious advantage to an estate is the increased boot space over an equivalent hatchback but most estate cars feature a longer roof and more leg room.

The Ford Focus estate is one of the most infamous examples in the UK. The Ford Estate is the third-generation model and was first introduced to the world at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The popular vehicle shares technology with the standard Focus hatchback, but does offer a heftier carrying capacity and rear headroom due to its longer body.

A hatchback or family hatch is known for its boot lid and rear windscreen acting as one unit that moves together when opened. Hatchbacks often feature smart, compact designs as well as a more powerful engine. The only disadvantage of a hatchback is that, if you have a big family, you might have to choose between having comfortable passenger space or enough storage.

The Ford Focus (as well as the Fiesta) are the most common hatchback names in the UK. The Ford Focus hatchback is a smart-looking family car that has built a solid reputation on fun handling, sophisticated suspension and its VAST array of affordable lease deals.

The Body and Interior Design

From the outside of the new Ford Focus, the front end has been blessed with the most significant updates. With a notable new front grille and standard LED lights (that feature on the back) and not to mention the Ford badge that has relocated to the centre of the grille. The front LED lights also feature a new LED daytime running graphic as well as housing the foglights.

Take a step inside and you will notice an immediate update that feels modern and clean. The interior features a central band of shiny trim on the dashboard that is elegantly topped with a soft-touch section. The base-spec Trend trim offers drivers a massive 13.2-inch infotainment system where they can control navigation, media, and phone connectivity all in one place. The buttons for the Focus’s climate control and other functions are all large and well-labelled so are easy to hit.

The Engine Stats and Drive Quality

When it comes to the engine range, there is really no more that Ford can offer you. Drivers are totally spoiled for choice with an engine range that includes a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, a powerful 125hp 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine as well as a 153bhp 1.0 Ecoboost Hybrid 155.

The popular 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine is available in no less than three power outputs (85, 100 and 120hp) but many drivers see a significant performance boost with the 1.0 Hybrid engine. This hybrid engine is obviously more efficient, but also comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Driving the Focus is easy and enjoyable, not to mention affordable. Ford says the Focus will do 0-62mph in just 9.0, and that sounds entirely believable from behind the wheel. With the more advanced rear suspension fitted, natural steering and great handling, it makes for a wonderful family car.
