Nissan has announced that it has delivered the first ten 100 per cent electric and zero-emission Nissan Leaf vehicles to the Kanagawa Prefecture government.
The vehicles will be used for official prefecture business and the prefecture government has announced plans to incorporate 3,000 electric vehicles in the near future.
Toshiyuki Shiga, chief operating officer of Nissan, said: "We are pleased to deliver the first Nissan Leaf in Japan to Kanagawa Prefecture, which serves as a model local government supporting electric vehicle promotion in Japan."
He added that Nissan, whose headquarters are based in the Kanagawa area, will strive to become an active member of the local community and contribute as much as possible to the drive towards electric vehicles.
The vehicles will also be rented to local people during the weekends to allow the public to experience the benefits of electric vehicles with the hope of persuading them to switch in the future.
Nissan will be starting production of the 100 per cent electric vehicle at its UK plant in Sunderland in 2013.
