Nissan Leaf celebrates five years

Nissan has led the way in the electric vehicle market over the past five years with the success of its Leaf model.

Since its launch in 2010, the Leaf has been a 100 per cent electric powered car and so far owners have driven an estimated 1.2 billion miles – reducing carbon emissions by 328,482 tons.

A total of 200,000 Leaf cars will be produced by the start of 2016, with the majority of sales being made in the US and Japan.

However, demand is growing across Europe as more people opt for eco-friendly vehicles, as well as ways of reducing their fuel bills.

The Leaf has also proven a hit with the industry and has picked up close to 100 awards, including the prestigious World Car of the Year.

Nissan has confirmed it remains committed to the development of the electric car market and its 2016 Leaf will offer increase mileage between charges compared to previous generations.

"EV technology will continue to be at the heart of Nissan’s product development efforts. By combining our pioneering EV technologies and other intelligence and innovations, Nissan is moving closer to a zero-emission future for car transportation. With the technologies we are creating, mobility is becoming safer, cleaner, more connected and more exciting. That’s the power of innovation.
And that’s what you can expect from Nissan," explained Nissan president and chief executive officer Carlos Ghosn.
