One in three motorists would consider buying an electric car in the next 12 months, according to a new survey by Motorpoint.
The online poll, which quizzed almost 2,000 people, found that 41 per cent were impressed enough by the new generation of electric vehicles such as the Nissan LEAF to think about investing in one in the near future.
David Shelton, managing director of Motorpoint, said: "It is clear that there is likely to be an initial take-up of electric cars from the so-called 'early adopters'."
However, he added that manufacturers need to address key factors such as price, range, reliability and residual values to bring more people into the electric car market.
The news comes as Gateshead's Metrocentre installed the first of 12 electric vehicle quick chargers.
London will soon have more electric charging points than petrol stations in the near future following the announcement of a new installation programme, which will see 1,300 new charging points on the streets of the capital.
