Porsche Cayenne 2022 Overview

In this overview…

15 years into its tenure, the Porsche Cayenne is a rare and perfect blend of a large, luxurious SUV that can thrill you like a sports car.

When the Cayenne was first released in 2002, it caused a riot in the automotive industry. A sports car turn SUV has seldom been successfully accomplished before but, then again, Porsche isn’t any ordinary manufacturer. Since then, rivals such as Jaguar, Maserati and even Lamborghini have followed in their footsteps. Now, the sporty SUV market is booming and it’s arguably all thanks to Porsche.

The automotive industry that first judged the Cayenne has evolved and is now emerging as something very different from the one into which the 2003 original exploded. The Turbo S E-Hybrid is possibly the most intriguing Cayenne of all. The latest car is easily recognised as a Cayenne and has overtones of the smaller Porsche Macan and while Porsche hasn’t taken any big risks with the latest model’s looks, it’s undeniably handsome and fits in well with other models in the range.

The question on many Porsche-lovers minds is “is the Cayenne still the best sports SUV?”. Well, it certainly has a lot more competition these days, but non live up to the prestige of Porsche. Read on for our overview, and when you’re finished you can check out the best Porsche lease deals via our easy-to-use leasing page.

The Body, Interior Layout and Finish

Porsche is famous for its iconic 911 sports car and it feels that the latest Cayenne design tips its hat to the famous 911. The Cayenne comes in either a more recognisable SUV shape or with a sloping roofline like the Cayenne Coupe. While both of these hold onto the Porsche-typical styling cues, the Cayenne hasn’t had its basic shape changed in a while.

Its contemporary front and rear ends have enough 911-inspired cues to make it look like a proper member of the Porsche family. The body of the 2022 Cayenne features a sleek headlight design, a flowing bonnet and a fairly steeply raked windscreen. At the rear Porsche has added a small roof spoiler above wide rear haunches which has been accentuated by a rear light bar that runs the width of the car. If you opt for the Platinum Edition package, you will have additional satin-finish on the SUV’s exterior trim and unique 21-inch wheels.

Inside, every Cayenne is roomy and sturdily built. To top off the excellent service the Italian car-maker provides, Porsche even allows extensive personalisation. While its cabin has limited cubby storage, the 2022 Cayenne easily instils the joy of driving far better than most of its sporty SUV competitors, which earns it a place on the Car and Driver Editors’ Choice list.

The sporty theme continues throughout the cabin. The driving position is low-slung, similar to the Maserati Levante Trofeo, and the Cayenne’s steering wheel is suitably sporty and easy to manoeuvre.

The 2022 Cayenne receives updates to its infotainment system and the impressive technology that is found across the car. The Porsche hybrid comes with the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) as well as enhanced support for Apple and  Android products and a top-of-the-range navigation system. This sixth-gen PCM now offers over-the-air technology so that it can be wirelessly updated in the future and voice-recognition software that makes driving more enjoyable than ever before.

As standard, the 2022 Cayenne comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10-speaker stereo, and a Wi-Fi hotspot for the tech lovers amongst us. If you have the funds for an upgrade then the Premium package includes an impressive 14-way power front seats, adaptive LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring and a panoramic sunroof.

Engine & Drive

Fact: there’s no such thing as a slow Porsche Cayenne. No matter which level you opt for, it will feel like a thrill to drive. The 2022 Porsche Cayenne has a particular set of skills where it can move gracefully and effortlessly, despite its heavy curb weight.

There is a choice between a 2.9- or 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, the 3.0 V6 paired with an electric motor, or a 4.0-litre V8 petrol for your 2022 Cayenne. Every model has a cohesive powertrain, but their potency and fuel efficiency vary due to the sheer variety. Even the entry-level version, with its 335bhp turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine, accelerates from 0-62mph in just 6.2sec and pulls strongly from low engine speeds.

For a more eco-friendly drive, there is even a 455-hp plug-in hybrid option that’s quick on the street and friendliest to the environment. Not only is this a move environmentally friendly option but it also offers better fuel economy as it is able to travel up to 88mph and 25 miles on electricity alone. The Cayenne E-Hybrid is quicker even than the S, not to mention most other hot hatchbacks since it combines the 3.0-litre petrol V6 of the standard Cayenne with the added zip of an electric motor.

Is the Porsche Cayenne a Good Car?

It is hard to deny that the 2022 Porsche Cayenne is a spectacular SUV. This is especially true for drivers who value balanced handling and thrilling performance with their vehicles.

Not only does it have a huge boot, but the Cayenne is also available with a whole collection of driver-assistance technology such as forward-collision warning and parking sensors at both ends. It even supports night vision with an optional infrared camera. For more information about the Cayenne’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

While leasing a Porsche is never going to be the cheapest option on the market, the 2022 Cayenne does offer great handling and a thrilling drive that comes with the prestigious Porsche name.
