Skoda Octavia Estate Review

In this review…

Cheaper to run, more economical and more practical than its rivals, the Skoda Octavia Estate is a top-class model you shouldn’t avoid.

It’s surprising to see that the Skoda Octavia Estate has become a forgotten gem. The base Octavia model is the Czech automaker’s best-seller because it’s one of the most level-headed and dependable cars you can lease today. Excitement may not be high on the list, but it is top of the class when it comes to a comfortable driving experience loaded with amenities and cost-saving features.

Yet, the world seems to have moved on from estate models with the explosion of crossover SUVs. Even within the estate market, the Skoda Octavia Estate has rivals in the Ford Focus Estate, Seat Leon Estate and Volkswagen Golf Estate. Can the Octavia hold its own with all this in mind? We look at the design, interior, drive and practicality of the new model to find out.

Design

The Estate model differs from the normal model by having more space in the boot without compromising on body shape, as well as having more equipment available as standard.

Looking from the outside, the design of the new Octavia Estate looks more refined with sharper headlights and a more detailed front bumper. It better indicates the sophisticated experience that’s in store.

Interior

Inside, the new redesign has simplified the barrage of buttons that was once clogging up space. Now, it’s almost all shifted into the 10” touchscreen centre console that has wireless Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Then, Skoda lets loose on some unique trinkets and goodies that make you assured of making the right choice of car. Complimentary umbrellas hidden in the front doors, an ice scraper tucked behind the fuel filler cap, phone storage pockets for rear passengers and a USB port positioned perfectly for dashcams are just some of the design quirks that make day-to-day life that much easier.

Drive

Whether it’s a petrol or plug-in hybrid, the Skoda Octavia will offer the same brow-soothing driving experience. Its economical engine means that in most driving conditions, it’ll be running on 55mpg or thereabouts. Cruising in a straight line on the motorway is the Octavia’s element, but the precise steering comes into life without any quibbles when it comes time to turn off onto a country road. What’s more, not many cars can offer the same serene and dialled-down engine, but that isn’t the only aspect of the Octavia Estate that brings convenience, comfort and utility.

Practicality

Practicality is the Skoda Octavia Estate’s strongest asset. For one, the boot space is up to 640 litres – more than you’ll find in any other model in its league. This spaciousness follows through to inside the cabin, with excellent head and legroom for both front and rear seaters. Small design details such as the extra-bulky storage holes in the doors make the difference when you need to store a large bottle.

Against the crossover SUVs that so many are itching to get their hands on, this estate costs less initially and is cheaper to run, more economical and more practical than most of them. Plus, the Skoda touch means that more comfortable than its estate rivals. This is a top-class model you shouldn’t avoid.
