The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has urged the government to freeze fuel duty to relieve pressure on motorists and hauliers alike.
Planned for April 2011, the duty rise could put extra strain on household budgets, and the SMMT believes a more measured approach to increases would ensure stability while protecting government revenue.
Motorists looking for fuel efficient VW deals may wish to check out the XL1 prototype which was unveiled at the Qatar Motor Show.
Advance construction technology, an advanced plug-in hybrid drivetrain and innovative packaging allow the XL1 to return 313mpg on the combined cycle while emitting just 24g/km of CO2.
Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said: "We now need government to play its part in helping consumers and businesses by freezing fuel duty and providing stability and certainty on motoring taxes."
In June 2010, SMMT urged the government "not to raise taxes and duties on vehicles and fuels above the rates and horizons as set in budget 2010", pushing the point that "a stable tax and duty regime" is vital.
