We look at BYD, GMW Ora, Omoda and the new class of electric car brands.
In this post…
Look at the upcoming new cars set to release next year, and you’ll spot a looming threat to the status quo. The UK has grown accustomed to the same usual 20 brands you see on the road, but there’s a serious challenge to that with a new, disruptive class of electric car brands.
From BYD to Omoda and GWM Ora, these new automakers available to UK drivers represent an approach to car making that feels very Gen Z – with futuristic shapes, bubbly and innocent-looking body features and tonnes of tech packed in. It’s unlike anything else we’ve seen before in the market, not just because of the quality and price cuts of these vehicles, but the sheer amount of new names. You may think that they will all fall on deaf ears, but with the impressive EV stats and a considerably more affordable price point, they will catch the attention of UK customers.
Why Are There So Many Chinese EV Companies Now?
Of this new breed of EVs, an enormous wave of them are coming from China. After years of servicing the Chinese market, they are now turning their attention outward, focusing on international expansion. It’s amazing how the Chinese market has evolved – once known for creating copycats of European and US models, now they are moving in on the assault to beat them at their own game.
How are they able to do this? Well, since EV technology is relatively new, it’s far quicker for these carmakers to catch up to established Western brands in terms of quality, range and performance. Plus, Tesla has shown that you can muscle your way to the top even if you’re a comparatively nascent brand, which has only emboldened new startups.
But China faces unique hurdles. The challenges are coming from other territories, as the EU looks to protect its historic brands in their market by imposing tariffs of up to 38% on Chinese-imported vehicles. The UK, post-Brexit, does not have these same tariffs in place, so there’s a far greater opportunity on our shores.
It’s worth keeping in mind that if you’re sceptical about the long-term reliability of these models, which is understandable for any new name, a lease is perfect for getting the best years of a car’s life without the potential downfall of later-life car ownership. BYD: The Rising Face of Chinese EVs
BYD is already available in the UK in multiple models, including the Seal fastback, the Atto 3 crossover and the Dolphin hatchback, and they are the biggest name in the mix of new brands. We examined the appeal of their hotly-anticipated supermini – the BYD Seagull – by speaking to an owner who lives in China, and we learned that BYD has hit upon, according to our interviewee, “a brilliant mix of practicality, fun, and futuristic design.” Their smoking gun is that they produce not just the cars, but the batteries and other components as well, meaning they have a far easier time ensuring their cars perform reliably. This will put them in good stead when they duke it out with the established names in 2025.

GWM Ora: The Whimsical, Stylish Citygoer
When a manufacturer decides to dub their city car the “Funky Cat”, it’s safe to assume that they’re looking to bring a bit of fun to the self-serious world of motoring. Ora, the brand started by Great Wall Motors (GWM), stands for “Open, Reliable and Alternative”, and that shows in boatloads in their design philosophy. The new Ora 03 takes the ‘bubble car’ design and runs with it, blending retrofuturism aesthetics with instantaneous cuteness to create a very fashionable electric car. Younger, more style-conscious drivers will get a kick out of this brand’s ethos.

Omoda: The Cutting-Edge Tech Universe
Founded just two years ago, Omoda sits on the edge of the seat of EV innovation. Take the Omoda 5, a petrol-powered SUV whose front grill and tail lights adopt a 3D matrix effect which shows that there’s a world hidden inside this car. The EV version of this model, the E5, will be available next year. Their vision for driving is highly personalised and intelligent, and they have not just cars but an entire ecosystem of Omoda drivers that are connected by a love for their future-forward lifestyle; they called it the ‘O-Universe’. If their output matches their ambition, Omoda could be a very fierce competitor indeed.

What’s Coming in 2025
These brands are already available to lease now, but let’s take a look at the new names you’ll get to know in 2025.
IM Motors
A new luxury sister brand from MG Motor UK, IM Motors comes with a tonne of promise. Its name standing for Intelligence in Motion, the Chinese carmaker will launch next year with the L6, a sleek coupe SUV with quilted-pattern seats, a dashboard-length touchscreen display and a Proactive Vision Supplement System (PVSS) which displays the world in front of you in a virtual environment reminiscent of a video game minimap.
NIO
One of the oldest of the new faces, Nio’s story began in 2014 and has always exuded an air of futuristic elegance. Known for its pioneering spirit, NIO has always been on the lookout for the next big breakthrough, whether it’s in battery-swapping technology or autonomous driving systems. With other products in the world of smartphones and power chargers, the upcoming Nio ET5 will be sure to make you feel like you’re part of the future.
Zeekr
Bursting onto the scene with youthful energy, Zeekr strives for a harmonious blend of style and technology in a way that rivals Omoda. However, they are known for their quality customer service and commitment to creating something that makes drivers feel like royalty.
