Vauxhall Ampera customers ‘can benefit from govt offer’

Vauxhall Ampera customers could be set to benefit from a new government offer aiming to encourage greater electric vehicle uptake.

Those who pick up a motor from the Ampera extended-range of electric vehicles after checking out the latest Vauxhall deals could take advantage of free installation of a home charging unit.

The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition revealed it will offer money to drivers to cover 75 per cent of the costs associated with such an installation up to a maximum of £1,000 including VAT.

On the same basis, Vauxhall said it will meet the outstanding 25 per cent for new retail customers who decide the deal is just the ticket for them.

In addition, the government initiative – which is worth in the region of £37 million – is also encouraging local authorities to install on-street charging posts and rapid chargers, while charge point installations at railway stations for electric vehicle commuters can also be claimed by train operators.

Ian Allen, environmental strategy manager at Vauxhall and chairman of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' Electric Vehicle Committee, said: "We fully support the government's announcement and are very happy to meet the remaining home charging installation costs for Ampera customers.

"Vauxhall welcomes a nationwide plan as it means all Ampera drivers will have the cost of their home charging solution covered, not just those who live in certain geographical areas."

The Ampera was released in the UK in 2012 and boasts a battery range of between 25 and 50 miles, with a small range-extender motor intervening after this point, which provides an extra 300-plus mile range.

Unlike conventional hybrid vehicles, the wheels of the Ampera are driven electronically, which could prove attractive to those in search of a motor that not only delivers from a performance perspective, but also a car that is environmentally-friendly.

The news comes after Vauxhall announced it will be making four premieres at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show – the Cascada, the Adam Rocks and Adam R2 concept vehicles and the 1.6-litre diesel engine, which is appearing in the Zafira Tourer.
