Volkswagen Golf R Overview

VW Golf R 2022

In this review…

We look at the new 2022 Volkswagen Golf R Line from all angles, including the bodywork styling, interior design, engine options and ride quality.

The Volkswagen R Line celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Launched by the German automaker as a high-performance ‘AMG’ style brand, the R Line has intermittently given special VW models a healthy dose of horsepower and sports styling. Now, their magic spell has been placed on the best-selling VW Golf Mk8, a car that has won award after award and held the fort for the company’s hot hatch sector with great strength. It has more than earnt the R Line treatment, but what are the final results?

Looking back, The R Line has worked on Golfs more than any other model, and it makes sense. Throughout its 50-year history, the Golf has held a special place in the heart of tuners who customise and transform the inside and outside into a scorching racing machine. There are several magazines in the UK alone dedicated to Golf tuning, so the practice has become. Now, let’s see what Volkswagen’s own team of boffins can do with the new Golf.

In this review, we’ll look at the Golf R Line from all angles, including the bodywork styling, interior design, engine and ride quality. The Body and Interior Design

The stock Volkswagen Golf has a lively, sporty feel to the bodywork, fitting sharp headlight stylings, dramatic wheel spokes and downright villainous grille accents onto a rotund shape. Under the chisel work of the R Line team, the Golf is even more of a stunner thanks to some 18-inch space-age alloy wheels, a modest but practical rear spoiler and four chrome-plated twin exhausts behind. Turn up at any tuner event and look at the beefed-up Golfs around you, and you’ll find that you’ll fit right in, and that’s precisely what the designers were going for. Volkswagen has always been encouraged by its devoted Golf fanbase. The new Golf R feels like another letter of appreciation that can give you the tuner experience in one convenient package. You can get the sense that this is the Golf Volkswagen wanted to make when they initially unveiled the Mk8.

The interior continues this feeling, but in a way that can justify this car as an everyday run-arounder. Balancing comfort and sporty tendencies, the cockpit has an all-accommodating infotainment system with all the expected modern features (Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple Airplay, sat-nav), seats that grip you well even in hairpin bends, and a leather steering wheel that not only has heating functionality but has a wealth of buttons to make quick settings changes that much easier. From a design perspective, everything is dripping with blue from the seat textures to the electronic dashboard, keeping in line with the Berlin automaker’s long fascination with the colour. One that isn’t blue is the engine – it’s a red hot upgrade.

The Engine Stats and Drive Quality

Seemingly pulled from the core of a dormant volcano, the new VW Golf R is powered by a searing 2.0-litre turbocharged that outputs 315bhp. In a straight line, this means that 0-60mph can be over and done in 4.7 seconds, which in such a small package is enough to send you into hysteria. What’s more, if roads allow you are able to reach a top speed of 155mph, but keep in mind that that’s electronically limited. The best way to describe the Golf R when it comes to its performance is that in spite of its compact size, it is an absolute demon.

The immense feelings the car can pull out of you is worth the entry fee alone. Taking corners and slamming the throttle on the exit feels like the apex of a rollercoaster ride, launching you to speeds and momentum that will feel like you’re being pulled along a trip to ecstasy. In the interest of tailoring your experience much like a tuner makes little alterations to enhance different aspects of driving, VW has a range of modes including a drift mode that makes handling an utter joy, as well as a provocative ‘special mode’. We won’t spoil what that one does.
