Three vehicle and technology concepts for Volkswagen vehicles created from thousands of ideas submitted by the general public over the last year are on show at Auto China 2012 in Beijing.
Volkswagen's People's Car Project (PCP) began 11 months ago, asking fans of the vehicle manufacturer to suggest ideas for the car of the future. The firm has developed the Hover Car, the Music Car and the Smart Key from the project, which saw 33 million visitors to the website and 119,000 ideas generated.
"The creative ideas from the ‘People’s Car Project’ give us a valuable insight into the wishes of Chinese drivers," Simon Loasby, head of design at Volkswagen Group China, said.
"The trend is towards safe cars that can easily navigate overcrowded roads and have a personal, emotional and exciting design."
The Hover Car is a two-seater city car that hovers just above ground level. The idea behind it is that its zero-emissions functionality presents an environmentally friendly way to travel in the future using system of electromagnetic road networks.
Music fans in China have been excited at the prospect of the Music Car, which uses organic light emitting diodes to change the colour of the vehicle depending upon the driver's choice of music. As a result, the car becomes an ephemeral representation of self-expression and taste that will no doubt appeal to young drivers looking for ground-breaking Volkswagen deals.
Lastly, Smart Key marks a move towards the incorporation of online capabilities in vehicles. The thin 9mm key includes a high resolution touch screen that provides the motorist with up to date information on fuel levels, weather and the car's security through 3G connectivity.
Drivers can even use satellite capabilities to look at a real-time bird's eye view of the car to make sure it is still where they left it.
"PCP in China marks the beginning of a new era in automobile design" said Luca de Meo, director of marketing at Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars.
Due to its popularity, PCP will continue indefinitely as Volkswagen hope to redefine its future product strategy through the desires of the people.
