Drivers reminded about eye tests

Road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring is reminded motorists to make sure they have their eyesight tested on a regular basis.

Recent research from Vision Express revealed 15 per cent of all drivers have not had any form of eye test since the passed their driving test.

The study also found that 92 per cent of motorists on UK roads claim they can meet the current legal eyesight requirements – although more than 60 per cent were unable to explain what those requirements are.

GEM road safety officer Neil Worth is calling for drivers of all ages to be forced to take compulsory regular eyesight tests.

He added: “Our eyes are the most important sense we have when it comes to driving.
Around 90 per cent of the information we process is visual, so what we see is a fundamental element of our decision making.
Many of us take our eyesight for granted, so the tendency is to ignore eye health.

“The present situation relies on individual drivers taking responsibility for their own eye health. That’s why it’s so important to get regular checks.”
