UK Car Sales Hit Record Lows As Electric Cars Continue to Rise

Electric Car

While petrol guzzlers has seen a drastic drop-off in new registrations, electric cars keep their growth going.

The British motor industry is in a worrisome state at the moment, as they are seeing record low numbers of UK vehicle registrations in June. New car registrations in June fell to 140,958 – you would have to go back to 1996 to find a weaker performance.

To hammer home just how drastic the shift has been, it is an almost 25% drop-off compared to June 2021, just a year before. It typifies what has been a slow year for the UK automotive industry, which has had the second-lowest first 6 months to a year in 30 years.

One of the deciding factors for this drop-off is the global shortage of chips. The decrease was driven by the ongoing global shortage of semiconductors, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), and has been further exacerbated by China’s implementation of severe Covid restrictions. Although the cost of living crisis certainly does not help, this may point to the drop-off as perhaps not so much that people aren’t interested in buying a new car, manufacturing bottlenecks may mean that not enough cars are able to be made to meet demand.

However, one sector that has shown no signs of slowing down is the EV market. Electric cars have taken their total market share up by over 5% in the past year, and the success of Tesla, Lucid and Polestar in the global market is only helping to raise the prominence of battery-powered vehicle startups. Electric car deals are becoming more affordable to the average consumer as the technology becomes more accessible and widespread, and the British government has pledged to ban sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, so electric vehicles will turn from the future of motoring to a necessity in just eight years’ time.
