Fiat 124 Spider details revealed

The LA Motor Show has seen the new 124 Spider roadster from Fiat make its first appearance.

Although based on the Mazda MX-5, the car has been redesigned in similar proportions to the BMW Z4, and has been influenced by the Dodge Viper.

Fiat believe buyers will be tempted by car's two key feature – the so-called "seagull" wings and its sharp horizontal tail lamps.

In terms of engine, Fiat has opted to swap the Mazda's 1.5 and 2.0 litre options for its own 1.4-litre petrol engine seen in the 500 Abarth.

Interior-wise, the car has a similar set-up to the MX-5, with the same dials and buttons. The Fiat 124 also only has a manual roof, with no option to purchase an electric upgrade.

Both the Fiat 124 Spider and the Mazda MX-5 are to be made at Mazda’s factory in Hiroshima, Japan, with production of the Fiat model being delayed until the second half of next year.

Prices are expected to start from £20,000 for the base model.
