Record month for new car sales

Last month saw close to half a million cars registered as the market continues to enjoy a bumper period.

It is the highest number of new car registrations ever recorded in a single month with a total of 492,774 vehicles sold, according to the figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The growth has been generally driven by an increase in fleet sales, although a range of new models and low finance deals have helped to boost the performance of the private sales sector.

With the general election approaching, SSMT has called for the next government to continue the widespread investment in the UK's car industry – especially in the creation of new jobs at the UK plants of many of the world's leading car makers.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: "The challenge for a new government and industry will be to maintain this momentum and to strengthen Britain’s
manufacturing capabilities through continued investment, innovation and policies which maintain our global competitiveness.

"Whatever the general election result, the new government must keep up the commitment to the sector which is delivering at home and abroad."

The best selling cars remained the same as in February 2015, with the Ford Fiesta leading the way, followed by the Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Focus in third place.
