Volvo plans electric vehicles

Volvo has confirmed plans to release its first fully electric car within the next two years.

The automaker has also committed to autonomous technology, with a self-driving car on release by 2021.

Hakan Samuelsson, president and chief executive officer, believes the demand for such vehicles will be high, especially within fleet and company car drivers.

“We think a car with both electric and autonomous drive is not that far away. Our first electric car will come out in 2019 and we plan to have an autonomous car in 2021," said the Volvo boss.

He added: “Autonomous drive will be the most attractive feature in a car that has been released in many, many years. This is because it will suddenly allow you, as a consumer or a driver, to use hours of wasted time in a more productive way. Suddenly, you can use your car as an office. I think that has a huge value.”

It is expected any autonomous Volvos will retain the option for manual driving, with an autopilot off feature fitted to its self-driving cars.

Exact details of powertrain technology remains under wraps, but Mr Samuelsson confirmed Volvo are working on developing more than one model and are looking at small and big platforms.
