Fiat drivers ‘unlikely to be involved in collisions’

Those who drive Fiats tend to be particularly careful when on the road.

While style and affordability are among the factors people consider when researching the latest new car deals, the number one priority for most of us is safety. All modern cars place a great emphasis on this aspect – but it seems some motors are less likely to be involved in collisions than others.

One such car type is the Fiat, as new research from MoneySupermaket has shown owners of these autos are among the least likely to make a claim for an 'at fault' accident on their car insurance.

Indeed, the study revealed Fiat drivers are only behind Subaru and Smart Car owners when it comes to making the fewest number of claims for motor accidents – 66.6 per 1,000 motorists.

What's more, it was found that when analysed by car model, the Fiat Cinquecento was the least likely of all cars to be involved in a collision – with just 30.8 claims made per every 1,000 drivers.

Neil Greig, director of policy at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, noted it is the best motorists who will take the most care of both their vehicles and their driving because they are aware that higher premiums and reduced secondhand values will be the outcomes of any collisions they are involved in.

Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at the price comparison website, said: "Being involved in a motor accident, however severe and whether you are at fault or not, can be a very traumatic and costly experience.

"Claiming for either an 'at fault' or 'not at fault' accident will have an impact on the cost of your car insurance premiums."

The research showed that Nissan and Peugeot drivers are also among the least likely to make an 'at fault' claim, while the fewest claims made per 1,000 drivers were owners of the Austin Mini, the Hyundai Atoz, the Morris Minor, Ford Ka and the Fiat Cinquecento – which claimed the number one spot.
