Motorists warned about cost of used tyres

TyreSafe is taking the opportunity ahead of the winter weather to warn drivers about the false economy of buying part-worn tyres.

Research by the body and Trading Standards have raised concerns that second-hand tyres could also have safety implications, with 93 per cent of part-worn inspected in recent activities having been sold illegally, with many found to have safety-critical flaws.

Figures also suggest the lifetime cost of being used tyres is higher than new tyres – £6.33 per mm compared with £5.32.

Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe, said: “However tempting it may be to save money by paying a lower price at the time of purchase, motorists should be aware of the false economy.

“Your tyres will have to be replaced much sooner and at a similar price to the ones previously fitted so you won’t benefit in the long term. TyreSafe urges Britain’s motorists to put safety of themselves and others on the road first and not buy part worn tyres.”
