Motorists can beat duty and VAT increases

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has laid out a number of ways motorists can avoid being hit by the increase in fuel prices and the VAT increase.

Drivers looking for a new vehicle have been advised to buy the cleanest new technologies to take advantage of government incentives for low carbon cars and to get long-term value by qualifying for lower VED bands.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said: "With a greater focus than ever on fuel efficiency and low carbon transportation, 2011 is set to be a year in which savvy motorists choose a new vehicle that works in their favour, saving them money and delivering innovative new technology."

A wide range of Fiat, Vauxhall and Volkswagen deals are available to motorists looking to get great value from their cars as the cost of motoring continues to increase.

The manufacturers also have a wide range of vehicles which qualify for the new 100 per cent congestion charge discount by emitting less than 100g/km of CO2.

Boris Johnson recently announced that electric vehicles would also be eligible for the congestion charge discount in the future.
