Estate-shaped Ford Mondeo Hybrid coming spring 2019

The hybrid version of Ford’s iconic Mondeo is to be offered as a spacious and practical estate from spring 2019.

Currently, the Mondeo Hybrid is only available in the saloon bodystyle, reporting CO2 emissions of 101g/km and a combined fuel economy of 64.2mpg.

It uses a standalone self-charging system, which means that there is no need to plug in to recharge
the car’s battery and replenish its electric range.

Ford says the car combines the refinement of any regular Mondeo and the efficiency of a hybrid, but what it doesn’t have is the practicality of an estate.

But that’s all about to change, with the Mondeo Hybrid Estate potentially offering around 1,600 litres of boot space, which is a decent improvement on the 1,437 litres you get in the standard Mondeo saloon.

Actual boot capacity will be confirmed at a later date but a statement from Ford insists that the new Mondeo Hybrid Estate will “enable customers who require greater load-carrying capability” to buy in to the benefits of an electric powertrain that offers a similar driving range and freedom offered by a traditional petrol or diesel engine.

The Mondeo Hybrid Estate is likely to use the same petrol-electric powertrain, pairing a 184bhp two-litre petrol engine with an electric motor powered by a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion, air-cooled, recyclable battery located behind the rear seats.

A Ford spokesman said: “For many customers, the practicality offered by a estate body style is an absolute must, so from next year, those drivers will also be able to reduce their fuel bills using the sophisticated petrol-electric powertrain of our new Mondeo Hybrid Estate.”

Expect more plenty more Ford models to go hybrid or even pure electric over the coming years – the brand is investing £8.37 billion into developing its electrified powertrains and plans to deliver 16 fully electric vehicles by 2022.

The saloon-shaped Mondeo Hybrid may report 64.2mpg officially, but a eco-driving contest this summer saw it exceed 123mpg over 80 miles to triumph in Essex’s Layer Marney Cup economy trial.
