Increasing numbers ‘keen to change car’

An increasing number of people are keen to buy a car in the coming 12 months.

If you're thinking of getting your hands on a new motor this year, you're not alone.

Britain is a nation of car lovers – and new research has suggested our appetite for new vehicles is on the increase.

According to the second Car Buying Index from Motoring.co.uk, almost 40 per cent of consumers are hoping to drive away with a new set of wheels over the coming 12 months, which represents an increase on the number of motorists who said the same at the end of last year.

It seems checking out new car deals will be a top priority for drivers over the next three years, with 77 per cent of those questioned claiming they are hoping to get behind the wheel of a different vehicle in this time.

What's more, the study showed just 23 per cent of respondents believe they will still be driving the same car three years down the line, which is significantly lower than the 28 per cent recorded at the end of 2012.

As far as the most desired brands go, Ford continues to lead the way, with 13 per cent citing it as their carmaker of choice. This was followed by BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz.

There are many factors to take into consideration when deciding on a new purchase, but price has been earmarked by the survey's respondents as the most important.

Other matters buyers look into include the car's miles per gallon, its reliability and fuel type, with rising petrol costs impacting the type of vehicle motorists are looking to own.

Terry Hogan, director at Motoring.co.uk, commented on the findings: "Value for money is still a big driver in model consideration and that doesn't look like its changing in the short term.

"Strong manufacturer price offers and finance deals are helping to grow the demand for new cars. Ford remains the number one new car brand in the UK."

He added it is the premium brands that appear to be benefiting the most from increasing registration gains.
