Jaguar XE becomes world’s fastest saloon with the £150k 591bhp SV Project 8

Jaguar has let its Special Operations division have its wicked way with the XE saloon and the result is the fastest production car in the brand’s history.

Named the XE SV Project 8, the super-saloon has been confirmed as the world’s fastest production sedan after it set a new lap record in the States.

Powered by a 591bhp five-litre V8 petrol engine linked to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the car raced around the 2.2-mile course at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, California in 1min 37.54sec.

This comes after it set a new record for the fastest production saloon around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, completing the 12.9-mile circuit in 7min 21.23sec back in November 2017.

In a straight line, the XE SV Project 8 can dart up to 62mph in 3.7 seconds, picking up speed until it tops out at 200mph.

This isn’t some daft one-off car that we mere mortals can only dream about though; you can actually order one right now, but you might have to be quick because only 300 will be produced and you’ll need a hefty wedge of cash.

Each example will be completely hand-built at Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations in Coventry, carrying a price tag of at least £149,995.

Michael van der Sande, managing director of the Special Operations division, said: “This Laguna Seca lap record is another powerful demonstration of the Jaguar XE SV Project 8’s performance credentials. This record-breaking sedan is made for the world’s most demanding driving enthusiasts.”

Aesthetically, the all-wheel-drive XE SV Project 8 is notable for its genuine motor racing technology, such as F1-style ceramic wheel bearings, adjustable ride height and adjustable camber.

The front and rear fenders have been modified to accommodate the larger, wider wheels – Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres if you’re interested.

The car comes as standard with four seats, but buyers can opt for the two-seat Track Pack which throws in lightweight front carbon fibre racing seats with four-point harnesses fixed to a harness retention hoop in place of the rear seat.
