More women on UK roads compared to the last decade

There are more women on the roads today than ever before, after the number of female car buyers increased by more than a fifth in the last decade.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that there are now 11.8 million women drivers in the UK, which is 21 per cent more than in 2007.

There are now more than 1,500 different car models and 65,000 individual model specifications in the UK motor parc, compared to 1,200 and 56,000 respectively ten years ago, which has helped expand the diversity of Britain’s roads.

Automatic models have become more prevalent in the past decade too, with a 70.5 per cent rise since 2007 – they now represent one in four cars in the UK.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said all this means that UK consumers are enjoying more freedom and mobility than ever before, along with greater reliability and improved fuel efficiency.

“This latest analysis shows the shifts in consumer preferences and behaviour over the past decade and provides insight for car makers and dealers to help them adapt to changing consumer behaviour in the future,” he added.
