Ford extends UK market lead

July saw Ford car sales climbing by 38.2 per cent on the same month last year.

Ford has continued to extend its market lead in the UK, with another high-selling month in July.

According to official figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the four-week period saw the carmaker securing its best total vehicle share – 16.5 per cent – for four years.

Indeed, while total UK car sales in July climbed to reach 162,228 – an increase of 12.7 per cent on July 2012 – Ford sales alone stood at 25,597, which represented a 38.2 per cent upswing on the 18,468 reported in July last year.

The best-selling car of the month was found to be the Ford Fiesta, which was able to improve its market share by 0.4 percentage points to reach 5.7 per cent, while the number two slot was occupied by the Ford Focus with a market share increase of 1.2 percentage points.

Mark Ovenden, chairman and managing director at Ford of Britain, said: "Car sales are continuing their positive trend in the UK and Ford sales are ahead of overall market growth with private customers driving up our share of more profitable retail sales.

"Ford's best-ever model range is at the heart of this success, which was underlined in July with every nameplate, from Ka through to Galaxy, increasing sales compared with July 2012."

The findings also showed that for the year to date – ending in July – total UK car sales amounted to 1,325,851, which represented a 10.3 per cent hike on the same timeframe in 2012. For Ford alone, this number stood at 188,993, which marked a climb of 11.9 per cent for the brand.

Sales increases were seen right across the Ford portfolio, with encouraging figures posted for the Ford Ka, B-MAX, Fiesta, C-MAX, Kuga and Focus.

July witnessed a fall in UK commercial vehicles, however, with this sector being down 1.6 per cent compared with the same month in 2012.
