Can new cars refuel a passion for driving?

Few things reinvigorate a love of driving like a lengthy look at the latest new car deals and it seems that is exactly what is in order for the nation's drivers.

A poll from the road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has showed a third of British drivers simply do not enjoy driving any more.

However, a simple perusal of the newest models may help lift the gloom as the latest cars now have the sort of mpgs that can make driving much cheaper and directly combat the survey's number one reason for the lack of enjoyment – the cost of fuel.

High petrol and diesel prices were cited by 51 per cent of IAM respondents who no longer enjoy driving as the cause of their upset. This was closely followed by congestion (41 per cent) and a lack of leisure time (25.9 per cent).

Chief executive of the IAM Simon Best said: "With congestion and fuel prices it’s easy to understand why many people think driving is a chore. But the UK still has some of the most beautiful roads in the world and if you have the right skills and confidence in your ability driving can be as enjoyable as ever."

The research, which was based on responses from 2,229 individuals, also revealed that 39 per cent of people still love driving and call it their hobby or passion, with a third of people enjoying the occasional drive purely for the pleasure of being behind the wheel.

Furthermore, the UK has a high opinion of its driving skills, with 53 per cent of respondents thinking they are good drivers when compared to other road users, while 45 per cent would class themselves as very good drivers. In fact, most respondents felt it was other motorists who were causing the problems, with 60 per cent of people saying their fellow drivers make them nervous.
