Topless models – a new way to stop speeding?

Topless models are playing a part in reducing speeding in Russia.

Drivers who speed are not only putting their own lives in danger, but also those of other road users and pedestrians, which is why it is so important that car owners are dissuaded from putting their foot down when they're not supposed to.

New ways to prevent people from speeding appear to be popping up all the time, with common methods including sleeping policemen and speed cameras. But as we both know, these techniques are not the most popular among us drivers and rather than looking at them as a way to improve safety on the road, many motorists consider them more of a nuisance than anything else.

It is therefore vital that new and improved ways of preventing speeding are given a chance. However, I'm not too sure whether a new ploy in Russia will stand the test of time, as it includes women walking the roads in nothing but knickers, stockings, knee-high boots and hats!

The stunt was supported by local policemen in the Nizhniy Novgorod area east of Moscow and was intended to catch the attention of those driving by. And grab the attention it certainly did, with the topless models holding up 40mph signs whenever a car approached that was going above this speed.

According to the Sun, news outlets in Russia reported that the scheme was a big success. Unsurprisingly though, most of the people who slowed down were male – and presumably just as interested in checking out the girls as they were in driving at a safer speed.

It is thought the public organisation Autodvijenie was behind the initiative, with the timing of the stunt coming before new rule changes in the country that state drivers will only be fined if they go over limits by 20km/h, as opposed to the current 10 km/h.

I guess it remains to be seen whether or not the scheme catches on in the UK, but I'm guessing not…
