Government supports efforts to design green Ford cars

Drivers looking for eco-friendly Ford deals could benefit from government investment in low carbon vehicles.

The government is supporting six Ford projects worth more than £1.5 billion with £360 million in loan guarantees.

This will go towards the development of more environmentally-friendly engines and technology.

Ford chairman Joe Greenwell has welcomed the government’s decision, as it "greatly assists" the company’s commitment to producing low carbon vehicles.

Business secretary Lord Mandelson added that the government is "ready and willing" to support innovative research and development projects such as those being undertaken by Ford.

He said the car manufacturer has an "important role to play in the UK’s aim to be one of the leading manufacturers of low carbon vehicles".

Ford’s projects should have the added bonus of safeguarding about 2,800 skilled jobs in Britain.

This comes after the manufacturer confirmed that it hopes to roll out five full-electric and hybrid models in Europe within the next three years.
