New Vauxhall electric car production begins

Eco-conscious motorists may be tempted to compare new Vauxhall deals after the manufacturer began production of its new electric vehicle.

The first new Vauxhall Ampera has rolled off the production line at General Motors’ assembly line in Warren, Michigan.

It will be able to travel up to 40 miles on its electric battery, before an energy generator kicks in to extend its distance capability to around 300 miles.

Andrew Farah, vehicle chief engineer for the new Vauxhall Ampera, said the carmaker is on track to meet its production target of making the model available in Europe in 2011.

"There’s still work to be done, but being able to drive an Ampera off our pre-production line is a great accomplishment for the teams here and in Europe."

The production milestone for the Vauxhall Ampera comes after the manufacturer announced an upgrade to its Meriva model.

It stated that motorists who look for new Vauxhall deals will get a car that is uniquely versatile, with back doors that feature rear hinges to make exiting the vehicle simpler.
