Second-gen Audi A1 revealed, coming November

Audi has revealed the new A1, ahead of its arrival this November.

The baby of the Audi range has been completely redesigned from the ground up and has grown a fair bit.

It has been extended by 56mm, and now measures 4.03 metres in length. Width and height remain virtually unchanged at 1.74 metres and 1.41 metres respectively, and the supermini retains its low-slung stance with a wide track and short overhangs.

The second-generation A1 will need that extra length, because it will only be available as a five-door Sportback, with three-door variants getting the chop.

Boot space has grown thanks to the stretched length, increasing by 65 litres to 335 litres. Meanwhile, flapping down the rear seats ups luggage capacity to 1,090 litres.

Equipment will be split over three trim levels – SE, Sport and S line – and three petrol engines: the one-litre three-pot 30 TFSI with 114bhp, the 148bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder 35 TFSI, and a
two-litre 197bhp TFSI.

A 94bhp TFSI unit will join the range as the A1’s entry engine shortly after launch.

All engines can be linked to either a manual gearbox or the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox, with the exception of the 197bhp two-litre petrol, which comes linked to a six-speed S tronic transmission as standard.

Detailed spec lists haven’t been published yet, but Audi has confirmed that even the entry-level SE version will come with a fully digital instrument cluster with a high-resolution, 10.25-inch display and a multifunction steering wheel as standard. Audi’s stupendous virtual cockpit will also be an option on certain models.

The S line adds styling tweaks such as larger air inlets, striking twin tailpipes, additional sill trims, an elongated slit centrally below the bonnet with two fins and a larger rear wing. At launch, the 197bhp 2.0 TFSI will only be available in S line form.

Orders for the new A1 will open from September, with initial UK deliveries happening in November.
