Volkswagen Passat breaks distance record

Motorists looking for Volkswagen deals that offer good fuel economy may have to look no further than the Volkswagen Passat Bluemotion.

The car set a new Guinness World Record for distance travelled on one tank of fuel, completing a distance of 1,526.63 miles, before finally running out of fuel.

A team from the Sunday Times travelled from Maidstone in Kent to the South of France and back, with the car running out of fuel close to Calais on the return journey.

The VW Passat Bluemotion's fuel tank was completely drained before the attempt and filled with 77.25 litres of standard diesel which results in an overall fuel consumption of 89.23 miles per gallon.

Powered by a Volkswagen 1.6 litre common rail TDi engine, the Bluemotion car used for the attempt was a standard production model.

The Passat Bluemotion is fitted with aerodynamic modifications to the bodywork, a lower ride height and Stop/Start technology, which is also standard on the Polo and Golf Bluemotion models.
